Democracy is a ridiculously overused term thanks to, frankly, US and Western propaganda. I’m not saying our system is bad or that the US trying to spread representative government based on free elections is bad, but we push a very simplistic “democratic societies versus closed/totalitarian societies” narrative in favor of actually understanding the many diverse systems and institutions used in different ‘democratic’ societies. The US is a constitutional representative republic, not a direct democracy. Switzerland is one of the only countries in the world that can really claim to be a “capital D Democracy,” because citizens can start referendum votes to immediately change any policy they disagree with. Democracy means voters directly make decisions about policy. Most ‘democratic’ countries are Republics, where voters elect representatives who then create policy. Even among representative Republics, there are many differences in voting systems. The US system of winner-take-all single member districts has fallen out of favor in almost every other Republic because it tends to produce two gargantuan parties with only minor differences in policy position. Proportional representation systems allow for a much more robust policymaking institution. Instead of being played by one side against the other to disrupt that carefully gerrymandered 50/50 balance in swing states, the dumbest 20% would be split up between a number of smaller parties, and if some of those parties were way outside the mainstream, coalitions would form without them and they’d have little direct influence over policy. They would still get a seat at the table and a voice in the discussion, but the system would be much better at ignoring some voices when they’re batshit insane.

I can tell you that I, as a believer, used to look at the world through a filter of belief. That everything I encountered was matched up against a particular way of seeing the world. If it didn't work with what I believed, I discarded it as unnecessary, wrong, or evil.
